THE BLADE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE: HOW DOES THE GILLETTE SHAVE COMPARE?
To become a shaving expert, it takes experience. Over the years, our expert barbers have honed their craft in the barbershop by providing thousands of shaves to a diverse customer base—encountering facial hair of all types and testing dozens of different blades on the job and off. In the shop, our barbers use a straight razor, a blade designed to shave someone else’s face. But, at home, every one of our expert barbers shaves with a traditional handheld razor or trimmer. And in the end, all of our barbers agree: whether at home, or in the shop, the best shaves always start with the best blades. So, we partnered with Gillette – who we think make some of the world’s best blades – to have three of our veteran New York City barbers try out the Gillette Shave Club
and the new Gillette Fusion ProShield Razor with Flexball Technology
to see how it stacked up to their normal razor pick.
Here’s what they had to say:
Eric, barber for 5 years in New York City.
Eric has been a barber at Blind Barber for years, splitting time between our shop on the west coast and our shop in New York’s East Village neighborhood. He believes that the key to a great shave—outside of using the best blade—hinges on accurately following the natural contours of the face to reduce blade friction.
“My shaves at home look a lot like the shaves I give customers at the shop. I start with a warm towel to open my pores, follow with a pre-shave oil, then apply a thin layer of shaving cream. But even with this prep-work, I’ve had problems in the past with handheld razors because I have a narrow, angled face. But when I tried the Gillette razor, I noticed that the Flexball feature allowed me to closely follow my face shape as I shaved.”
Julien, barber in New York City since he was a teenager growing up in the Bronx, NY.
Julien grew up cutting hair on apartment stoops and remembers giving his best friend his first haircut when he was just 13 years old. Because Julien often works with clients who have coarse, curly facial hair, he has always been particular with the way he approaches shaves in the shop. At home, Julien typically maintains a 5-o’clock shadow by shaving with an electric razor—he finds that this alleviates his in-grown hair problem that many traditional blades often irritate.
In-grown hairs can be a major problem with course, curly facial hair like I have. I’ve learned the trick is to prep my skin properly and to shave with a
high quality razor. The Gillette Fusion ProShield definitely helped and I noticed the difference right away.”
Customers come to Blind Barbers because they don’t just want a close shave, they want a lasting shave. The best blades and products are what you need to get both at home. The Gillette Shave Club
provides guys with what I think they need to recreate that lasting experience. This is the best my face has felt in a long time.”
Rob, head barber at Blind Barber, has been a barber in New York City for 5 years.
Rob was pretty much raised in the barbershop. He grew up in northeast Ohio, where he swept hair in his father’s barbershop since the store opened over 30 years ago. Now, Rob stays busy in our East Village shop, where he leads our team of New York barbers and oversees our straight razor shave procedure. For Rob, shaving is all about process. He finds that his face responds best to a shave when he approaches his shave the same way every time.
"I’m very particular about my shaving process, and I don’t often stray very far from it. I’m also a firm believer in enjoying shaving—it shouldn’t be a something you dread. The Gillette Shave Club made the entire shaving process simple. I got all the tools I needed to achieve a great shave experience right to my door. I’ve tried out other Shave Clubs, but I would definitely recommend Gillette’s over the others when it comes to quality of the blades and the shave I was able to get.”
